  Additional Instructions and Notes
This pattern is related to Shell 6. The original pattern was a 7 row repeat pattern, intended to be worked in the round for a stocking pattern in How to Use Florence Knitting Silk No. 4 published in 1882. In order to work the pattern back-and-forth on 2 needles, either a row must be added, as in Shell 6; or a row is taken out, as in Shell 8. If you want to adapt back to working in the round, (1) omit the extra stitch and work on 8 stitches only; (2) read the even number rows from right to left; and (3) on even number rows convert the purls to knits, for example, Row 2 would be "ssk, k5, yo, k1."
